My primary focus is now restricted to artisan dollhouse miniatures with a few exceptions here and there. In my previous home, many of my houses were displayed in one upstairs room where I painted a Rufus Porter-style mural around three sides of the room. One wall was copied from the mural that appears in the Tynietoy mansion while the other walls feature scenes from the Delaware Valley landscape where I lived with my husband and troublesome cat on the north side of the Musconetcong Mountain.
We have found the extended commuting time an issue for my husband and have decided to move closer to NYC. We are in the process of preparing to move again and I expect to have a more fully equipped studio at our new home. A Sentimental Journey I was presented with an unusual opportunity around Thanksgiving when out of the blue, I received an email from the son of the late Gretchen Deans.

The stylistic techniques used to date formal furniture such as Chippendale and Hepplewhite simply does not work for American country and primitive furniture. Country furniture does have its styles based predominately on religion and region. The catholic French and the Irish built cupboards with bold moldings, cut out feet, raised panels and they painted their cupboards in bright colors.
The puritan New England cabinetmakers built simple unadorned cupboards painted in drab colors. The Shakers are well known for their simple but elegant furniture. Furniture built in the Midwest and the South is different from New England made pieces. The problem with using style to establish the construction date of country and primitive furniture is that regional styles remained unchanged for most of the 19th century.
Unable to use style, dealers and collectors have turned to the telltale signs left on the furniture itself by tools and by construction methods. This system is remarkably accurate to within a ten-year period. During the Industrial Revolution, the method of making nails, screws, hinges, latches, and of milling lumber changed often. Each change is documented, most are patented. The style of nails changed a dozen times, the hinge changed four times, the screw changed three times, and so did latches and pulls.
The methods of working wood also changed during this time. The saw changed, molding styles changed, mortising changed.

Shortly after the decision came down to move Heddon to Fort Smith the remaining inventory was depleted and the Dowagiac factory doors were locked for the last time. EBSCO Industries, upon purchasing James Heddon’s Sons operations in Dowagiac deeded the entire Heddon real estate and buildings to the city of Dowagiac with the understanding that the city would divide and rent out small spaces of the plant for small manufacturing operations and the offices for development into a small office plaza containing small rental offices with common services to accommodate small area businesses, salesmen and such.
While the plan was well intentioned, they never developed enough interest to bring this project to fruition. The factory remained dormant for many years until when Don and Joan Lyons purchased the factory. Upon graduation from college in Mr. Lanny West had been a salesman with Daisy-Heddon since While he worked his “home territory” he served customers in Michigan and Northern Ohio. West visited the Dowagiac plant often and became very acquainted with the Heddon staff there.
He became the marketing liaison person between Rogers and Dowagiac. West has enjoyed a long and pleasant career in the fishing lure industry and has been associated with Heddon throughout his career. He is considered a Heddon Historian by most. We look at the design of various types of furniture and furnishings, the interior architecture , as well as materials and techniques, plus some of the main designers. Menuiserie or Ebenisterie During the 16th century furniture was the province of the menuisier who worked in solid wood. The nearest English equivalent to the term is ‘carpenter and joiner’, but this is not entirely satisfactory.
At this time the technique of inlaying, extremely fashionable in Italy, was in France the province of the menuisier, but when it was replaced by more sophisticated techniques such as veneering and marquetry in the early years of the 17th century, the most skilled menuisiers became known as ebenistes, a term often translated as ‘cabinet-maker’ which again is not strictly accurate. The menuisier proper continued to be responsible for seat-furniture, table-supports, such furniture as buffets a kind of cupboard and armoires wardrobes of solid wood, the decorative carved panelling for walls boiseries , door-cases and overdoor mouldings, and window-cases and shutters.
In this he was assisted by wood-carvers, and by painters, varnishers, and gilders.

History[ edit ] Marble doors, Tomb of the Palmettes, Mieza , 3rd century BC The earliest in records are those represented in the paintings of some Egyptian tombs, in which they are shown as single or double doors, each in a single piece of wood. Doors were once believed to be the literal doorway to the afterlife, and some doors leading to important places included designs of the afterlife. In Egypt, where the climate is intensely dry, there would be no fear of their warping, but in other countries it would be necessary to frame them, which according to Vitruvius iv.
The stiles were the vertical boards, one of which, tenoned or hinged , is known as the hanging stile, the other as the middle or meeting stile. The horizontal cross pieces are the top rail, bottom rail, and middle or intermediate rails. The most ancient doors were made of timber, such as those referred to in the Biblical depiction of King Solomon’s temple being in olive wood I Kings vi.
The doors dwelt upon in Homer would appear to have been cased in silver or brass. Besides olive wood, elm, cedar, oak and cypress were used. A 5, year-old door has been found by archaeologists in Switzerland. Those found at Nippur by Dr. Hilprecht dating from B. The tenons of the gates at Balawat were sheathed with bronze now in the British Museum.
The wood doors would seem to have been about 3 in. Other sheathings of various sizes in bronze have been found, which proves this to have been the universal method adopted to protect the wood pivots.
