In the middle of the journey of my life, I am–as always–a woman on a bike. Although I do not know where this road will lead, the way is not lost, for I have arrived here. And I am on my bicycle, again. I am Justine Valinotti. As I mentioned, it had become my commuter during my first year of graduate school. Now I’m going to tell you about the bike that replaced it–as my commuter, anyway. As old-school English three-speeds were out of production, and European or European-style city bikes were unavailable in the US, the bike I bought was probably about as suited to urban commuting as any new bike one could buy at the time. The Schwinn Criss-Cross , in its own way, was brilliant.

Balance bicycle for young children The bicycle has undergone continual adaptation and improvement since its inception. These innovations have continued with the advent of modern materials and computer-aided design, allowing for a proliferation of specialized bicycle types, improved bicycle safety , and riding comfort. Types Bicycles can be categorized in many different ways: The more common types include utility bicycles , mountain bicycles , racing bicycles , touring bicycles , hybrid bicycles , cruiser bicycles , and BMX bikes.
Less common are tandems , low riders , tall bikes , fixed gear , folding models , amphibious bicycles , cargo bikes, recumbents and electric bicycles. Unicycles , tricycles and quadracycles are not strictly bicycles, as they have respectively one, three and four wheels, but are often referred to informally as “bikes” or “cycles”.
Bicycle and motorcycle dynamics A bicycle stays upright while moving forward by being steered so as to keep its center of mass over the wheels. This lean is induced by a method known as countersteering , which can be performed by the rider turning the handlebars directly with the hands or indirectly by leaning the bicycle. Bicycle performance The bicycle is extraordinarily efficient in both biological and mechanical terms. The bicycle is the most efficient human-powered means of transportation in terms of energy a person must expend to travel a given distance.
Air drag, which is proportional to the square of speed, requires dramatically higher power outputs as speeds increase. Drag can be reduced by seating the rider in a more aerodynamically streamlined position.

Like most great Schwinn products, this sign is over 60 years old. There are a lot of old Schwinn bicycles kicking around Classic Cycle. In fact, there are enough of them that we decided that they deserve their own museum section. We owe the Schwinn family a big thanks.
A bicycle, also called a cycle or bike, is a human-powered, pedal-driven, single-track vehicle, having two wheels attached to a frame, one behind the other.A bicycle rider is called a cyclist, or bicyclist.. Bicycles were introduced in the late 19th century in Europe, and by the early 21st century, more than 1 billion have been produced worldwide.
I also changed out the original pedals for SpeedPlay Frogs so I can use a nice shoe for walking in without changing shoes to do so. I use SpeedPlay Frogs on 3 of my bikes now even the new road bike because I like them and I like the ability to walk around if need be. If you look at the Schwinn spec pages here: The only odd thing about my bike from the factory specs is the wheelset, I have the same wheel set and hubs as mentioned in the specs but the front wheel is a 40 spoke rim instead of a 36 quoted in the specs for either the Le tour Luxe or the two Voyagers.
The only thing I can think of concerning the 40 spoke front wheel is the factory most of ran out of 36 spoke rims when that particular bike or run of bikes were made so they used 40 spoke rims they had in stock. Schwinn seriously upgraded the Le Tour Luxe in 85 compared to the 2 previous years which were more slight upgraded low end Le tour’s, but Schwinn did that with a lot of their bikes in This bike has grown to be one my favorite bikes, it’s very comfortable when I load it with about 25 to 35 pounds of gear when I do weekend tours, the more weight I put on the bike the more comfortable riding it becomes even more so than my Lynskey though the Lynskey is the most comfortable non touring road bike I’ve ever owned; I can’t wait till I retire and do a cross country trip on that Le Tour Luxe.
All parts are original and it rides great. All gears shift, break pads may need to be replaced, they feel hard, but still work. Shimano transmission is original Wheel

Locating the Serial Number – Chicago built Schwinn serial numbers are found on the left rear axle-hanger or fork-end on the frame. If letters were used for date codes, they skipped the letters “I” and “O” as they looked too much like numbers. This scheme is for all Chicago built non-Paramount models excluding Superiors and Super Sports whose serial numbers are located on the left rear axle hanger and consist of a single letter code for the month [again, skip"I” and"O”], the last digit of the year and a 3-digit sequential build number — e.
The Super Sports with Huret dropouts seem to have used a two digit year ‘C ‘ — March, , th frame. The Le Tour and Super Le Tour models had their serial numbers on the left rear axle hanger and many began with an ‘S’, followed by the Japan Made numbering system. The number will have a production month letter in either the first or second position and a production year number in the other first or second position.
Beginning in the s, many Schwinns feature a 4-digit stamp on the head badge that represents the assembly date and consists of the Julian day and the last digit of the year decodes to the th day of or — use decals and components to determine the decade.

But, you can NOT trust what anyone says about the items they are selling! Some eBay photos should be preserved by the Smithsonian as national treasures, seriously. But I constantly see honest people repeating nonsense that they believe is true about the items they are trying to sell. When I spend time on eBay, it hurts me to see some of those fine photos being used once, and then lost and gone forever.
It also hurts me to see the spread of misinformation.
